Healthy habits only stick if they work for you.
That being said, we can understand how you might have some questions. Just click on any of the multi-colored headers below to open or close a list of questions.

Corporate
Q: Does Recess do anything virtual?
All of our consulting services and education classes can be offered through webinar, online or telephonically. We are also able to record webinars and phone calls for you to keep and reference for later use or for group members who may have had to miss a session.
Q: Will my employees be able to integrate the Recess programs into my workday?
No doubt about it. Recess actually has curriculum on how to exercise and stretch at work. Our staff are experts at designing practical exercise routines that don't require strange rules, restrictive time constraints or expensive equipment. We have designed strength and conditioning programs that use nothing but body weight or a few resistance bands.
Q: How can Recess programs be customized to my employees' needs?
For Group programs, Recess works with small to mid sized employers to identify employees' interests and craft a program that will be most likely to increase employee satisfaction.
For Corporate clients, Recess facilitators use a methodical and well defined facilitation process to identify custom and unique problems and solutions for each individual company. Recess facilitators work hand in hand with shareholders, managers and employee wellness teams to create highly tailored and customized on the ground worksite wellness programs.
Q: How does Recess back-up its claims?
Recess' approach is based on time-tested, science-based curriculum and best practices such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Worksite Health Promotion guidelines and ACSM Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. Our health educators have four year degrees in health related fields, three years of field experience and additional licensure and certification through accredited organizations (ADA, NASM, SCSM, NSCA, etc.).
Our case studies and metrics show that our work produces results for clients who meet us half way. Our Group, Individual, and Corporate case studies show measurable results in the following areas: health risk assessment aggregate results, weight, body fat percentage, aerobic capacity, strength, and dietary intake changes are some of the ways we measure and see our clients progress. What's more our programs have high ratings of satisfaction among participants.
We gladly provide references to prospective clients.
Q: Is Recess for groups, or for individuals?
Recess is for both. But mostly Recess is for positive, doable, fun, health behavior change. Ultimately even organizational change comes down to getting individual people to willingly and happily adopt healthy behavior. That takes time and consistent motivation and effort.
That's why Recess' staff is made of two kinds of people. Some Recess staff have business, benefits, organizational metrics and change expertise to work with groups on planning and implementation of programmatic aspects. Other Recess staff have in depth training in health behavior change, coaching and program design. They work primarily to educate groups on health behavior change and to work with individuals on integrating health concepts into their lives.
Q: What if my employees or I travel frequently?
Recess is perfect for people who travel extensively. If you are way too busy to get a decent value out of gyms, or strict diets or programs with weird and restrictive rules, because you can't be consistent enough to see results then we can help you. Recess can help you to sneak portable and fast exercise routines into your busy day and to easily learn tricks for healthy eating that might never have occurred to you.
You can use Recess' easy online booking system to make appointments that suit your schedule and many sessions can even be done remotely by telephone or online or both. You benefit by working with Recess staff to make a realistic and completely personalized program that fits your life and travel schedule.
Q: How long does the program go and what kind of a time commitment do I have to make?
Our standard program length for all of our packaged services is twelve months. Each group and individual package contains a total number of hours, classes or services which you are welcome to use whenever you choose within those 12 months by booking your appointments in our online Recess Booking program. Corporate services come with a standard list of time commitments and steps that Recess provides at program start-up in order to help with planning. Typically program startup will require approximately 10-20 hours of client time in the first three months with an ongoing commitment of about 2-5 hours per month thereafter. Normally it is the worksite wellness team that spends the most time working directly on the worksite wellness program.
Q: What if I am a company that isn't "corporate"?
Recess itself is an independent, woman-owned company. Our great strength comes in our flexibility to work with clients to identify what services best fit their needs. The way we've grouped our products reflects what most typical businesses of certain sizes often require but we are always excited to create custom programs, too.
Q: What is your typical corporate client like? How are they using Recess?
Our typical corporate clients are normally companies with a strong focus on both the bottom line (i.e. they'd like to see lower health care utilization and absenteeism), but that also have a strong interest in creating a great work environment with high employee satisfaction.
They have usually tried to do worksite wellness on their own. Once they got far enough into it they realized that health behavior change is not as straightforward as they'd imagined. They come to Recess looking for help.
Recess acts as their wellness manager by: identifying current problems; using metrics and measures to communicate to employees, shareholders, and managers; surveying the workforce to understand practical barriers to implementation; identifying strategic health risks in order to prioritize behavioral change campaigns; facilitating and providing hands-on education to internal champions and wellness teams to increase the probably of program success and reach; identifying and creating unique campaigns to change health behaviors and managing teams toward rolling out such initiatives; reviewing and retooling programs based on established metrics; making what could be a very boring program fun and attractive to employees.
Q: What services can Recess provide?
Recess provides: fitness training, group fitness classes, nutrition education and materials to individuals and small groups. For corporations and businesses that want to create a custom and comprehensive worksite wellness program we provide worksite wellness program consulting services such as: gap analysis, metrics, planning, wellness team facilitation, program implementation and review.
Q: What would my return on investment be (either monetary/non-monetary) for implementing a corporate program?
"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."Thomas A. Edison
If there's one thing we've learned it is that Return on Investment (ROI) is a lot like weight loss. Here's how: By the time most people are ready to deal with the problem their first attempt is to look for a silver bullet.
Even if it took 10 years to gain those 20 pounds, they want it to lose it all plus some in 3 months. And to top it all off - they want it to be absolutely painless and easy. They try pills, diets, fads, or they work out and diet like crazy for a few months only to burnout and drop it later. In every such scenario the problem returns. The weight comes right back. If you find a good trainer - one who knows what they are doing - and you ask her, "How much weight am I going to lose?" she would ask you back, "Well, how hard are you willing to work? How committed are you in the long run? And are you willing to really listen to what I have to say and actually do it?"
The exact same scenario is true of corporate worksite wellness. There is a fair body of health promotion and corporate worksite wellness research that has been conducted over the past several years that shows time and time again that wellness programs, when done right, can produce between three to five dollars of return for every dollar invested by year three. Many programs produce much better returns, some produce cost neutral returns. Very few actually lose money.
If your company plans to commit the time, energy and resources that it takes to create a culture conductive to actually reducing the health risks of at least 40% of its population then most studies indicate that you will see ROI by year three; however, that also means that your program must be founded on metrics and data, address health and cultural barriers unique to your workforce, and have the support of internal champions and participants.
Orchestrating that whole process is Recess' job. We make sure you don't get off target or overwhelmed. By the end of year one your best ROI is non-monetary. We've taken you through the hardest part - start-up. Your program is now in place. You have a wellness team that cares, evangelizes internally and you have the ability to show to your employees how much you care about their well-being by using your wellness program in recruitment and retention efforts. By years two and three you will actually have involved and empowered enough people to make small sustainable changes in their health.
With Recess' help you've set up your programs correctly and tracked them with the appropriate metrics. At this point your monetary ROI comes in the form of 10-70% reductions in sick leave, 9-60% reductions in health costs, 20-60% reductions in Workers Compensation costs, 40-80% program participation and satisfaction rates.
Q: Where are you located?
Recess is located in Portland, Oregon. Our corporate services are available nationally and our Group and Individual onsite services are available in major metropolitan areas.
Q: Why the name Recess?
Remember how easy it used to be to stay healthy? And you weren't even trying! The thing is it can still be that easy. You just have to remember to make it fun and make it easy. Make it like Recess used to be.
Q: Would this be better for employees than a corporate gym membership?
Well, that depends. Do you often neglect to actually use your gym membership? Do you only go to your gym a couple of times a week and wander aimlessly from machine to machine? Are you bored of your gym or tired of having to travel there and find parking? Do you feel pressured to buy supplements, pills or services that you don't want? Are you concerned about old injuries that you have and want to make sure that you have a trainer who won't hurt you from lack of experience? Does it bother you that your trainer has no formal education in nutrition, but is giving you nutritional advice and instruction? Would you rather learn ways to exercise at home, on the road, or outside with minimal equipment? If you answered yes to any of these questions then Recess would be a much better fit for you than your gym membership. The point is, if you know what to do at the gym, like going and go enough to meet your long term goals, then why not do what works? The problem is that for most people gyms just aren't the solution they are after and don't work.
Q: What is the length of commitment?
Our standard program length for all of our packaged services is twelve months with the exception of Individual Health Immersions, which are workshops that go for shorter periods of time. Our packages allow you to use as many of the included services whenever you like, but we spread the cost of the program out over 12 months with no financing charges in order to make it more affordable for you. Now you can afford the kind of personalized and expert service in your home or office that was previously only afforded to movie stars and oil magnates. If you aren't quite seeing what you need then you can always call us toll-free at 1-866-578-7118 or request a quote for a custom package designed just for your needs.
Individual
Q: As an individual how would the program work?
Once you'd purchased the program online, a representative would call or email you within two business days to confirm your purchase. In that email they will try to understand your personal preferences and then match you with a practitioner who could help meet you to meet your goals. They would then set up a phone call to go over any questions you might have, review our online booking system, and walk you though the process of making your first appointment. All you'd need is a telephone and a computer with Internet access. Then you'd meet with your instructor. After your first appointment Recess will check back in to see how things went and answer any additional questions. At any point in the process you are always welcome to call us toll-free at 1-866-578-7118 with any questions, comments or feedback.
Q: My problem isn't knowing what to do, it is actually doing it.
Welcome to the club. We understand that changing the iron grip of habits is hard to do. We are, after all, people ourselves. We take a great deal of care to select practitioners who are sensitive to the challenges you face and can speak from a place of personal experience when helping you to break down and rebuild old habits. You are always welcome to candidly discuss what is and isn't working in your plan with your practitioner. It is their job and their pleasure to adjust the program to help you realistically address your personal health challenges and to capitalize on your own best impulses.
Q: What is the cost of a typical cost of an individual program?
We've tried to make your decision easy by grouping our typical Individual programs into packages. Our Individual Packages allow you to use as many of the included services whenever you like, but we spread the cost of the program out over 12 months with no financing charges in order to make it more affordable for you. Now you can afford the kind of personalized and expert service in your home or office that was previously only afforded to movie stars and oil magnates. If you aren't quite seeing what you need then you can always call us toll-free at 1-866-578-7118 or request a quote for a custom package designed just for your needs.
Q: What if I don't have a lot of time?
Then you've finally found a program that will work for you. Q: What is your typical individual client like? How are they using Recess?
We see two main types of individual clients at Recess.
The first is couples that have tried gyms, diets, and fads. They are interested in better health but are not crazy about the "scene" at gyms. They want to share their new healthy lifestyles with each other, but might have different interests, too, and are not sure about the best way to integrate good health into their lives in a way that will be motivating and realistic for both of them.
They typically purchase a package of services that includes personal health evaluations, individual and shared training sessions for each as well as cooking and nutritional education in their home. This helps them to create a healthy lifestyle that they both can share. This way they can support and motivate one another in their journey to better health.
The second typical individual client at Recess is the busy professional. The busy professional sometimes has small kids, or travels frequently and is often self-employed or works in a profession with workloads that fluctuate wildly (like attorneys or construction workers). This person is way too busy to get a decent value out of gyms, or strict diets or programs with weird and restrictive rules, because they can't be consistent enough to see results.
They come to Recess looking for ways to sneak portable and fast exercise routines into their busy day and to easily learn tricks for healthy eating that might never have occurred to them. Q: What is your typical group client like? How are they using Recess?
We have two very typical group clients. Because Recess comes to our clients almost all groups typically want the convenience and in depth instruction that having an onsite instructor affords. The first typical group client is normally small to mid sized employers who are not ready to implement a formal worksite wellness program, but who nevertheless want to offer an easy and convenient way for their employees to be more healthy. This group will typically buy products like twice weekly fitness classes (Transform: 100 Class Package), or, a series of educational seminars on health topics such as cooking and nutrition (Inspire: Lecture Series Package). The second typical client is an informal group of friends of coworkers who want more expertise, personal instruction and convenience than a gym. In this scenario the group will decide on the type of classes they would like, choose a location to meet (often a home living room or office), pool their resources and book their classes online with Recess Booking. Usually such groups choose a weekly (Enjoy: 50 Class Package) or twice weekly (Transform: 100 Class Package) fitness class.
