Wellness Programming Tip: Participation is Key
|
|
Getting the crowd engaged gets results.
Dee Edington is the director of the University of Michigan Health Management Research Center in Ann Arbor. A recent article by Jay Greene
of the Detroit Business Journal quotes Edington as saying, " ...success often depends on employee participation and what
an employer wants to accomplish - save money quickly with premium
reductions, or offer employees convenience and save money over time
with lower medical costs." The bottom line is that high participation is a must. What is more, Edington's research points to the fact that particpation must go beyond just health risk identification and awareness (such as HRAs and biometrics screenings) and include comprehensive intervention programming in order to actually impact health costs. Tip: Ask potential wellness vendors how much and what types of participation their programs create and at what level of financial incentive.

63% Participation in year 1 with only $25 incentive
Comprised of six west coast offices, law firm Bullivant Houser Bailey PC
was singled out as a "West Coast litigation powerhouse" by Chambers
USA's "America's Leading Lawyers for Business." Unfortunately, many of
the factors driving successful legal services firms are the same ones that lead to high health care costs.
In an effort to lower costs, Bullivant's team restructured employee
benefits - adding a high deductible plan moving toward consumer-driven
health care, including a 30% participation health risk assessment. Yet,
claims continued rising, and just as the company began running out of
options Recess came along.

| Too Small For Wellness? Think Again.
|
|
Smaller companies may see better participation.
Ease of communication and a more intimate work setting can actually be an advantage for small employers looking to implement employee wellness.
Even though the majority of Americans work for companies with between 2-500 employees, small businesses offer less health promotion programming that large ones.
What studies do show is that those small to medium companies that DO implement wellness are likely to see higher rates of employee participation than large companies.
Do you know every employee at your company by his or her first name? Then consider this when you think about your co-workers: something as simple as walking three hours a week cuts the risk of dying from breast cancer in half. How can you not choose to help
employees get serious about transforming their health?
